Dexter's Birth Story

Dexter's Birth was perfect for me.  It was healing.  It was happy and fun.
My goal was to have a happy birth.  A birth that wasn't like Max's.  A birth I was proud of.
And this birth was just that!

Dexter is now almost 2 weeks old.  He is nursing like a champ, which is another whole post in itself.  I never realized how healing breastfeeding could be.  I feel like a rockstar.

DEXTER'S BIRTH:

In September 2012 I had a miscarriage.  With our first baby it took us two years of trying before we got pregnant.  When we decided to start trying again we thought the same thing was going to happen.  Little did we know after two month we were pregnant, but soon lost the baby.
Two weeks later we were in a pretty bad car accident.  It was a blessing is disguise I wasn't pregnant.  I had a lot of healing to do after the accident and needed to focus on getting better before having another baby.
In November we found out we were pregnant again!  It was a great feeling.  But also scary because I was so worried about loosing another baby.
We found a great doctor.  Dr. Young at the Women’s Center in American Fork.  He was a blessing.  He was so kind, helpful and also cautious of my feelings.
My pregnancy wasn't easy, I had a lot of ups and downs.  But through it all the baby stayed very strong.  He was a fighter!

At 37 weeks my doctor told me I could have the baby at anytime.  The baby wasn't breech anymore.  My tummy was very low and I was starting to dilate.  I was ready mentally to have the baby!

On July 24th, Pioneer Day in Utah, I woke up feeling very sick.   I was nauseous, dizzy and very tired.  At 11am I finally called Will and had him come home from work.  I took a 3 hour nap.  I woke up feeling much better.
My Dad then called to check up on me.  I talked to him outside and decided to go on a walk.  And boy did I walk.  I walked for an hour, in the Utah heat, up hills and all around BYU.  I am pretty sure people were looking at me like I was crazy, but it felt good to be outside.

When I got home from the walk we then went to the new Provo Rec-Center.  And that is when I started feeling different contractions.  They were lower and in my back.  They were a bit painful, but I was still walking and talking and feeling good.  But my gut told me something was going to happen.

We got home at 5pm and the contractions kept coming.  I bounced on the ball and kept moving around.  I didn’t want this to be a false alarm.  At 10pm we called our friend Michael to come sit with Max while we headed to the hospital.  I was Strep B positive so I needed to get to the hospital to get an antibiotic.

We arrived at the hospital with my contractions at 3 minutes apart and lasting from 1 minute to 90 seconds.  When the nurse checked me I was only at a 2.  Bad News.  But it was okay and I expected to be in labor for a while.  Max was a long labor, 56 hours, so I was prepared for a long few days.
I labored all night.  The nurses were great at respecting my birth plan and letting me walk around the room, dance with Will, and bounce on the ball.  I listened to Alicia Keys and Billy Joel to make the contractions feel better.

At 7am I still was at maybe a 3, but I was 80% effaced and at a station +1.  My body wasn’t dilating.  At 9am the doctor asked me if I wanted my water broke.  I said yes, with the knowledge that the contractions would be stronger.
They didn’t get to bad, and at 3pm when I was checked again, I was 100% effaced at a station +1 and only dilated to a 3.  So frustrating.  I was upset because I didn’t want to have another awful labor like I did with Max.

We talked to the nurse (Deb) who we really liked, and the doctor.  At 4pm I got an epidural.  Which I was told would take 20 minutes to work, nope, 90 minutes later it finally kicked in.
*The plan wasn’t to get an epidural.  But in the end it was the BEST decision for me.  I have a hard time dilating.  The same thing happened with Max.

At 5pm I was dilated to a 4 still and the nurses told me to try and relax and my body would do the work.  At 8:15 the nurse came in (and to my shock), I was a 10!  Baby was on its way.  I went from a 3 to a 10 in three hours.

Dr. Young was on call.  We LOVE him.  And in the delivery room he was so fun.  He was smiling and so happy.  When he came in he said that baby will come soon!
I pushed for 10 minutes, through 3 contractions, and then Dexter was born.  He was born with a full head of dark hair.  And his skin was very dark.  Total opposite of Max.
He was placed right on my chest.  Something that I had been dreaming about and praying about.  I wanted the baby on my chest.  It was the best feeling in the world.

Dexter was born at 9:16pm on July 25th.  He was 7 pounds 1 ounce and 19 inches.  He had a 14.5 inch head, tiny compared to Max.  He is just perfect.
I was in labor for only 28 hours this time.  Huge difference!

This birth experience was so much different than with Max.  It was healing.  It was rewarding, and it was fun.  I am so proud of myself.  I am proud of Will and the support he showed me the whole time I was in labor.  It truly was such a rewarding day and I am so excited to be a mother again to another beautiful baby boy.

WELCOME DEXTER ANDREW STRONG!

  2. This makes me so happy! Glad you were surrounded by good, happy people. I had an angel nurse, Rosa, when I delivered Charlie. Dexter is so cute, and I love the pictures of Max and Dexter together. Adorable.
